That is inconsistent to what I hear. I was always under the impression that the red light is normal whenever the water got too cold, and it try to ignite the flame. I was not able to find the water heater manual in the Reference forum. Did I miss something ?

Also, in the manual I was reading, it says it tries to ignite three times without the operator doing anything additional (in other words it will try two more times if the first time doesn't work - then go into "lock out").

The manuals are easily located online. The model we often have is the direct spark ignition gas only Suburban SW6D
