Shiplap backsplash install: cheap and light!

I have a side question: How did you prep the melamine surfaces for priming/painting? What paint did you then use? After it dried thoroughly, is it pretty scratch resistant? (What I mean by that is, if you were to drag something across the surface of the paint, does it stay stuck to the melamine or "drag a path" back to melamine?)

I don't have much if any melamine left, but it is something I wondered about when I was thinking of painting my original cabinetry. I read up on it, but opinions varied on if it would be successful, how to do it, etc. (melamine being a bit Teflon-y).

Just finished painting the beds Blue...although not melamine, I ended up coating both beds 3 times with clear Varathane Diamond Wood Finish and this stuff will be like Kevlar when it's fully cured and I believe will work perfectly over melamine after that has been primed and painted. I am VERY happy with how it went on and is the perfect solution for the nicks and bangs in such a small space...Will report results when it goes over Melamine in a bit...

That is so beautiful. I actually like the look of a bit of wood in there to contrast with the white cabinets. Thanks for posting that scribing tool. I could have really used that in my boler (all those curves!)
