Info on Limited Slip rear axle/service

I guess they used to have that info stamped into the axles, but it must've changed more recently, you know, only 20 years ago....

Well, I looked up the tag on mine.

It’s the same 70U, just the newer 1999.5+ version.

Well if it was only 20 years ago...

So glad you posted. Who knows how many hours I might have spent under there looking for the BOM on the axle tube (although it was pretty clear that it wasn't there). So it seems like the tag used to *only* denote LS, whereas now (for definitions of "now" that started in at least 1998.5...) it also incorporates the BOM.

So are you saying that 70U is the official way to say "non-HD"?

Hmmm... Maybe I got it wrong in reading the table. I'm guessing we all have the normal Dana 70. They only list it as a 70U or 70HD if it's one of those models. Seems like the 70U has smaller pinion bearings, and the HD has larger? There are so many minute differences in these things...

Just so happens the receipt for the differential service came to the top of my "file this" pile this morning, so I figured I'd add some details just to give people an idea what's involved:

They identified the axle as follows:

D70 NO HD
BOM 606158-2 (so I DID have the BOM when I called Dana Spicer even though they said no, it's not on the tag but on the axle tube - this number is on the tag on my axle)

Work order:

Service rear differential
Gear oil 80w-90
SVOM19546A Positraction additive (this comes up as a Spicer product)

Total for parts and labor: ~$110.00

For this they removed the rear pumpkin cover, drained it and looked it all over, showed it to me, put in new fluid, and reinstalled the cover. They also checked the potential fit of the Mag Hytech cover (but I stayed with the stock one).

So far no noise (although mine was minor and intermittent) in just under 5,000 miles.
