Upper refrigerator vent sadness

After I dug out the lap sealant and unscrewed the four screws holding the cover on, I was confronted with a little biology experiment. It was so bad that I had no other choice but to laugh, then take a picture, then post it here so others can laugh along with me.

This rig has spent its entire life in sunny California, and we've been plagued by drought for the past few years. Yet, there is actual (healthy) moss growing under my fridge vent. It was similar under my air con.
