CAB floor soaking wet, HELP!!!

Post by dougm »

I was in the process of doing the sienna seat swap using electric bases. I had removed the old seats, then i had to route a wire from the drivers side to the passenger side to power the new bases. I lifted the Vinyl flooring and the padding underneath was soaking wet. I mean drenched, it isnt antifreeze, but i pulled the heater plenum cover off on the passenger side and inspect the heater core for any signs of leaking, found nothing.

I ran a coat hanger threw the condensation drain tube to make sure it wasnt plugged. Im at a loss now, i cant find where its coming from and im suspecting that its coming in via the cowl or via a leaking windshield from all of the rain.

It rained here for a week straight, but the truck has been sitting parked in the driveway all week. There was so much water soaked into that pad i cant imagine what else would be causing it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any else have this type of issue and find what the cause was? I guess i can go get a new windsheild installed so they can inspect everything while the windsheild is out. it almost had to be from a weeks worth of constant raining....

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Normally you can spray soapy water around outside of window, while blowing air on the inside of window to locate any leaks on windshield seal. Start at one area and slowly work your ways around while someone is blowing air on the inside. I use air hose but you could use leaf blower if do not have an air compressor.

I am resurrecting this old thread in the hope that someone has more recent information on this issue of AC condensate leaking from AC condenser box through the firewall and onto the passenger side floor.

Background Description: Upon return from a recent trip through the Laurentians north of Montreal, I noticed that the carpet UNDER the rubber floor mat was soaking wet. At first I suspected a leak somewhere around the windshield (we did have some rain). I did not find any apparent leaks around the windshield, but did notice that the seal around the black cowling at bottom of windshield (where wipers emerge) was totally gone. So, I replaced that cowling and then did a full water test with the hose--No leak into the passenger floor area. So, was feeling pretty good...that is, until I noticed about a week later that the floor was soaked again! No rain during this time, and only a 3 day trip to camp on Cape Cod in hot weather using the AC. Ugh. So I did some "Googling" and found several links to a common problem with the AC condensate water leaking through the firewall onto the passenger side floor--exactly my issue. There is even a technical memo fix from Ford about this issue that involves the installation of a rubber elbow to direct the AC condensate away from the firewall. So I had that elbow installed by my reliable Ford mechanic...even had him gently blow air up into the line to free up any blockage of the condensate drain from the AC condenser (in the past, I have had some evidence of mice, so thought perhaps some debris had settled into the drain-have long ago eliminated the mice...no recent issues). Following all this, I have noticed that some of the AC condensate does indeed drain to the ground when AC is running, BUT I am also still getting some wetness--not tons of water, but certainly damp carpet--under the rubber floor mat. It's not terrible, and I can use PIG absorbent mats to soak most of it up...but not really satisfied with that process.

So, wondering if any of you Chinookers have experienced this issue and/or have other suggestions. In particular, I would like to know if anyone has found a way to easily access the AC condenser box to check on the drain. Looking at diagrams on line, it seems like a pain to get at it from the engine side--it's shoe-horned in there and requires the moving of a bunch of stuff. And, I haven't seen anything on how to get at it from the inside cab side.

In addition to all of that, I have read that the seal between AC condenser box and firewall is a notorious leak point...so that even if the drain is clear, it could still leak! So what can be done about that???

Any and all help welcome. Thanks.
