Front Bumper Decal

When I picked up the Concourse I noted the front bumper had some kind of decal on it at one time. It appears that one of the 2 owners had removed it but left all the gum behind. I've never liked it and frankly it looks like crap. So a few weeks ago when it wasn't overly hot I started the process of removal. What a pain. Nothing really works to make it easy. Heat gun, WD40, GoofOff, plastic razor is all being employed. So far spraying it good with the GoofOff and going at it with the plastic razor is about it. I don't have a starter picture but picture 1 is after removing the line across the top of the bumper and pic 2 is today, removing the lower line. Very slow process is why I'm taking my time. Next break that's nice I'll finish the job.

Have you tried a 3M "Stripe off" wheel? They are commonly used to get vinyl names, etc. off of boats. Not sure if it would work on what you have, but just an idea.

(It's like a rubber wheel you put in a drill and use to get the stripes off).


OTOH, if you only have the gum left, here is what I would try (on the 'ol inconspicuous area first). It looks like your bumper is gelcoated fiberglass, right? Because this is what I would try on boats.

1) Denatured alcohol
2) Naptha
3) Acetone (shouldn't wreck anything but don't "soak" it - just on and off).

For sure that air dam area is a Chinook fiberglass part.

I thought it looked like one of those special molded bumpers, but didn't want to assume (my rig has the stock Ford front bumper). I also forgot to mention 3M adhesive remover. There is some that comes in one of those rectangular cans like acetone does, and also another one that is orangey smelling and comes in a big black spray can with a few colored stripes on it.

Do they come in small cans? I don't have much left to go and I wouldn't have a need for a lot of leftover anytime soon.

I'm not sure which you mean, but at most hardware stores you can get acetone or denatured alcohol in "small" cans. These are maybe half the size of the typical "rectangular solvent can." I'm not sure I've seen naptha in a smaller can, but perhaps. The Stripe-Off wheel is about the size of a typical wire brush drill "wheel."

The 3M spray is in a "tallish" spray paint type can. But useful for many things!

I mean come on, how can you own an RV and not need solvents?! Seriously though, I know what you mean and there is no reason to store solvents if you don't have to. I wish you were out this way (west) as I would say "bring it on by and we can try a dab of each" (and even finish the job presuming one of them worked).

I remember seeing your Concourse for sale on the Internet (for quite a long time) and noticed the ugly brown residue on the bumper. It's looking a lot better! Here are a couple of easy things to try. We use "Goo Gone" (not Goofoff) to remove tape and label residue from most things around the house, and it works well. Another surprisingly effective adhesive solvent is peanut butter! Finally, I have used vasoline effectively removing old masking tape residue, which can be very stubborn when it is old.

The industrial strength adhesive on your bumper may be too much for these household products, but maybe not. It is easy to try them out. If not, I would guess that the 3M adhesive remover is probably the next best bet.

Thanks all for the advice. I love peanut butter and definitely have that on hand. Can't hurt to try! I might even have a small jar of Vaseline. I guess put it on and let it set for a bit?

All these years I've never had a need for solvent. I'd be looking for a small can because it would literally sit for years in my garage. I've never needed it until now. I might check with my neighbor and see what he has. I'm almost done so I could save the money and continue with what I'm using. If I was still married I know I'd have some nail polish remover around!

(I mean, I carry solvents with me in the rig )
