Truma Combi furnace/water heater

Post by HoosierB »

Interesting design of a water heater and furnace combination. European manufacturer. I was getting pretty excited about this concept, until... I found a US price of $2,900!!! Yikes :o

I got pretty interested in it a few years ago, but besides price I had a couple of issues:

1) It's too high to fit under the couch (unless you make the couch higher or the floor lower, neither of which thrilled me.

2) I read a number of reports of issues, and the repairs seemed expensive (although I can't recall details right now, and that may have changed).

It is a cool concept though - I mean how many different propane appliances does one need heating things?

I think I remember a self-winterizing feature. Can't remember how that was controlled (or maybe I didn't look into it further since I ruled it out).

I think there is a missing "a" in the brand name between the "r" and the "u".

It maybe useful for those $90k narrow body class B, since there is very little space in there.

Are these an option for you Hoosier? $507 seems more palatable...It "appears" to be a direct fit. Mine is 17 years old, this is looking tempting!

For a water heater only, that is an option. I question it's efficiency as an LP only tankless heater though. I bet it guzzles the Lp pretty quickly.
The Truma Combi seemed interesting because of it's dual role.
So back to my original plan... upgrade to a new Suburban SW6DE (elec/lp combo) for about $330. Direct fit with the option of heating with shore power electric. Per a topic a while back, Blue~Go suggested adding a fifth breaker to the brown box dedicated to the SW6DE. Since we only have 30 amp total service, I will need to select my use between the microwave or WH so as not to overload. I will be able to install proper wiring when the couch is removed for the "Dano Twin Bed Mod". The water heater and furnace are 18 years old on my rig, too. We usually use a Lasko ceramic electric heater to get toasty. Can't remember the last time we used the Lp furnace...hmmm, maybe more storage space?

I don't even remember mentioning an added breaker - maybe I have been here too long?

I removed the furnace. I'd say about 1.5 hours to get it out the first time, then maybe an hour to put it back or remove it again. Not too hard. Only challenge is the club chair bases, so if you have the dinette (I can't remember) probably simple.

The original furnace is sitting in the garage in case I want to put it back. I use my Wave 3 most of the time, and carry a little 1500 watt electric heater for the odd time I am plugged in. OTOH, if I put a furnace back it might be the Propex HS2800. It's easy to get addicted to that extra storage space (Propex is much smaller, uses less power and I'm beieve is quieter), and also if I do put a furnace back a duct coming out in the hallway/bathroom area would be awfully nice (Propex ducts are not nearly as large as the original furnace ones).

Blue, my rig has a duct for the hallway/bathroom area, coming out from just under the closet door.

Interesting. How did they take it around the generator box (under the refrigerator). Is there space in the little storage locker there?
