Fluorescent light to LED light conversion, upholstered bezel surround build...

Post by Dano »

I replaced my old fluorescent light surrounds with new LED fixtures and this left an unsightly depression and screws stains visible once the new lights went in. I had some 1/4” plywood leftover so I figured I had better make some surrounds to cover it up. I have some original leftover matching upholstery material leftover so it will all match nicely when it’s done. Three lights, three panels required. When I disassembled my interior, I made sure to keep the fabric covered buttons from various locations to screw the panel in so it sits flat on the roof on the wider sections. All factory fabric and covers so it will match perfectly.
Beveled corners will match the bed corners but also to make it easier to upholster each angle so you will see less bunched up fabric and will hopefully sit flatter.

Clever!

I had a similar mark when I removed the Air-con. I happened to find a piece of "faux.... light granite?" foam board that worked really well, but your upholstery idea takes it a step further. Nice!

(I kept my original light fixtures and changed them to LED - in my year they had hideous "walnut" inserts which I painted white.... whew, buh-bye "walnut.")

I was going to make custom walnut inserts Blue but since you have them, now I can't, has to be original!

I couldn't wait to get RID of the (fake) walnut* inserts. Mine are white now. So walnut (or "walnut") is all yours!

BG

*Might have been fake oak; that's available too now :D

Cut the fabric down to size an stapled the backs with some leftover 1/4" staples I had for the last 20 years sitting on a shelf. Centered it up on the ceiling, one screw in the middle and then installed the light. Installed the buttons and it all tightened up nicely. Nice touch having the screw heads on the male ends being self tapping, they went in perfectly. Caution: some screws that come out of your old upholstery on these button studs are longer than others, be careful you don't put a too long screw through the ceiling! Also, the access hole I cut in the middle to pull the wiring is incorrectly placed, it is well off to one side towards the driver's side as the wires come through the roof, not in the middle as I anticipated so had to drill another hole.

It's walnut's poor cousin "dirty brown used Chinook material"...
