Custom twin bed builds, storage galore and weight savings!

Here are some close to done photos of my twin bed frames that are almost complete. Driver's side is in framing and passenger side only needs a top at this point. I figure I have as much space underneath as I do up top now. Net weight savings are about 100 pounds less than everything I took out. I have two custom cut memory foam mattresses that are also almost complete, will post photos as I go. Happy to answer and questions anyone might have. The piano hinge is screwed to a 8" piece that is screwed along the back. My mattresses are 6" thick so the top can stand straight up when open (blocking the window) and not bonk you on the head. The mattress length keeps it standing by itself through friction against the kitchen cabinet and driver's seat.

View of the lower shelves removed, drivers side, full access to everything underneath. The whole bed frame is held in by easily accessible screws and the entire unit can be removed if I have to work on a water tank or something like that. The short stud wall against the body is where the couch used to sit so takes the downward load very well. All the wood work is being held in place with drywall screws as I build it. All will be glued and removed as you will see on the passenger side.

Close to finished passenger side bed. The unfinished end butts into the stove cabinet. I made these units with angled corners to try and avoid bumped knees or legs and it looked kind of custom. Each mattress corner is also cut at 45 degrees to match the framing and trim below. It is cut 1" further out than the moulding edge to also create a small buffer in case you bump into it. The plywood top edge thickness will be hidden by the upper moulding edge making it seamless and perfectly flat.

Front paneling is 3/16" MDF bead board and will likely be used as the back splash material as well as the new refrigerator front panel to create a unified look. Everything will be painted and clear coated for water fastness and durability. Total weight for each bed frame is 42.6 pounds, each plywood top is 11.4 pounds and each mattress weighs 24 pounds for a total weight of 78 pounds per side +/-. To put it into perspective, my oak table, support leg and a few bits of trim weighed 38 pounds, almost exactly half of one full bed assembly. I doubled my storage, lost about 50 pounds per side and made it ten times more comfortable. Pretty happy so far.

Any cargo on the drivers side will be very light such to offset what is already a heavy side with water, etc. Driver's side will be the heavier items like tools, jacks, etc., and more forward oriented to distribute the weight as evenly as possible. Will get it weighed once everything is in on both axles to get stuff moved around to it's optimal location.

A couple of questions:
What is the overall height of the wood platform (not including the 6" mattress)?
What is the width and length of driver/passenger side mattresses you had made?
Did you gain any inches to the aisle width?

Thank you! Total height of each bed frame is exactly 17.5". (16" studs plus 3/4" thick top and bottom plates). My mattresses are 5.5" - 6" thick but you can actually order them thinner if you choose, very flexible in terms of choice to get almost exactly what you want. We are taller so our feet sit flat on the ground. I actually calculated the mattress thickness plus whatever it crushed with weight on it. It also had to be high enough to create space above the water tanks as well. The mattresses were memory foam and twin size at 72" maybe 73" long. I chose these so I can cut them down to my exact needs and to control what final sizes I needed, coil springs couldn't do that. The aisle width was one of my primary design concerns and I ended up with 22" wide. As importantly, when you walk in from the back, you get a nice clear view down the aisle towards the seat, very open looking. The dinette previously blocked that pretty substantially sticking way out. I think each twin was 32" wide down just slightly from a 36" actual twin mattress. I think this gives best all around sizing to maximize comfort, aisle space, in cabinet storage and seating comfort.

The mattress dimensions are exact to what I was thinking for my remodel. My original plan was to replace the jack-knife sofa with a "extendable bed frame" similar to the ones on several websites for caravan builds. However, seeing your remodel has me convinced that also removing my OEM dinette layout for the twin bed scenario plus adding my Lagun table assembly, is the way to go. And your are spot on about the benefits of the added width for the aisle.
It looks like you used combo of 1x2 and 2x2 for the frame construction?
