The bar thing that looks like it has something to do with the awning?

I think that is the middle support bar for the awning. It doesn't go to the ground or camper side, but rather lies up against the underside of the awning itself, "breaking" up the unsupported horizontal fabric area into two smaller squares rather than one long rectangle with bars only at each end. It's not always needed.
