Concourse stripes

Seems like almost everyone has trouble with the clear coat peeling on the Concourse stripes. There are several threads on this site addressing the issue. Even if you repair a portion of it, it's only a matter of time before another part starts flaking. I personally am not that enamored with all of the concourse stripes to begin with. I think it is a dated look and I like the look of the simpler scheme on the Premiers. I spoke with a media blasting company that told me they can completely remove all the stripes (on the fiberglass portion) without damaging any of the fiberglass. It is blasting water in combination with an abrasive. There are several abrasive materials such as soda, walnut shells etc. They will make a recommendation. I also plan on upgrading the front end to the newer van style. (Weldtec sells a kit for this) so I would have to repaint the fenders hood and portions of the grill anyway, so I am going to proceed with estimates for removing all the stripes. Fortunately I can do the painting of the front end "in house". Do you think a "plain" Chinook Concourse would look too much like a milk truck? Has anyone done this that could share pictures? According to many posts on here, the Concourse stripes are painted on, not vinyl. Would blasting remove painted stripes? (Sorry if that's a dumb question. I know next to nothing about vehicle painting.)

Hi Mark,

I have a Premier with the millennium paint scheme which I like but that is dated as well. (Its the picture that is on top sometimes with my Jeep Wrangler in the snow) I would think nothing is too little but have seen a Premier with a simple side striping that looks nice. I will look fore it and post if I find it. Nice to be able to do things in house!

Mine is peeling too, and I would like to know some of the option that does not involve constant work. I do like the stripes, however. My wife said it would look like a plumber's van without any markings.

My guess is that if one did a new paint job (of any pattern), the clearcoat peeling problem wouldn't exist. Clearcoats have come a long way. That's not to say anyone needs to reproduce the original stripes if they don't want them, but just that I don't think you'd be duplicating the issue. Earlier car clearcoats didn't fare so well either.

I have some photos of an all grey (re-painted) Destiny that I think looks really nice. I probably wouldn't do that just due to the extra heat gain, but that depends on one's climate and preferences.

I’ve been thinking that a two-tone would look good, especially on a 4wd... Paint it all darker/colored bedliner from lower stripe down.
