Cost of backups for the forum
Cost of backups for the forum
Per some of your requests I have checked into backup solutions. The easiest from a technical perspective is a service provided by the current hosting company. The cost is questionable and the details of how exactly they perform the backs are lacking (they give the features of what I can do with the backups.. I'm just an IT guy that is curious about how they are actually doing it.. in this case though.. I'm just a customer). Anyway, it's quoted at $8.34/month ($100.08/year). If you guys want, feel free to send donations to the tipjar with a note that it's for backups. I'll post to this thread as they come in.
Re: Cost of backups for the forum
$10 in for "backups or general site maintenance" haha.. trying to confuse me. I'm counting it as backups. Thank you! $90 left to go.
Re: Cost of backups for the forum
Just as I wrote that an additonal $25 came in. We are up to $35 now.. This was from someone that had previously "tipped" also. Thank you!
Re: Cost of backups for the forum
And just like thst, another $10 in the (not beer) backup fund from a particularly humorous member. $45 total now
Re: Cost of backups for the forum
you guys are funny with the comments.
2 more $20 donations. So we are at $85 now.
Re: Cost of backups for the forum
Another 10 and 20 came in. Along with a good idea for a swag store (Chinook related coffee mugs and dtuff.. unfortunately that would be crossing the logo copy rights.. ahh crap.. just realised I need to change the logo I have up on the top left)
Anyway.. thanks again everyone. I'll configure backups in the next 24 hours to run for a year. We may have to do this again next year, but we'll worry about that when the time comes.

Re: Cost of backups for the forum
I enabled the backup function, but it is in a "pending" state. Seems it only backs up every 24 hours also..I assumed more often, but I guess this is what we get (better then nothing). As a side note, I'm not thrilled with the hosting company since they were bought out a couple years ago (this forum is almost 4 years old now.. time flies). In the next year or 2, I will probably move to a new hosting company. A small amount of downtime would be expected just as there was when I did this forum software upgrade.

When you're ready, you might check out InMotionHosting, reviews always seem to give them good marks. My girlfriend has been using them for a small website for a year and her website is always fast. Their business hosting, below, does give you quite a bit for $5.99/month first year, then $7.99/month following years. They have the phpBB installable via Scriptaculous. And they have free daily backups for sites under 10 GB. Not sure how large this site is, with the images and files?

Re: Cost of backups for the forum
Well, another year has gone by (man the time flys at this point in life). I'm happy to say, that between the google ads and the generosity of members here (via the "tip jar"), there is no need to do another round of fund raising for backups. I paid for the domain and hosting for 3 years 2 years ago. So maybe next year when domain/hosting/backups are all due at once. might have to talk.. I think we'll be fine though. Wish I could figure out how to get the amazon affiliate thing working.. but they shot me down twice sighting some policy about forums. I could build a site for chinooks and bump this forum to where it was just a sections of a bigger overall site.. but ehh.. doesn't feel right to me to do that.
