Reflectix and Trash Cans

Post by Skillet »

Ok, from what I've been reading, most people get Reflectix for the windows. If you guys are saying it really works in the summer and winter, I'll go out and get some.

What do you all use as trash cans? I've just been stringing the handles of plastic shopping bags across the door knobs of the cabinet under the stove. While it's working, I'd like to do something nicer. I've found some quality, small, trashcans at Target but don't really know where to put it so it would stay out of the way.

From what I have read, Reflectix is not necessarily all it is cracked up to be for actual insulation (needs air gap, other things, etc. etc.). But it works great for windows, where an actual rigid sheet of, say, 1/2" extruded polystyrene would be rather unmanageable and hard to stow. I have a piece of Reflectix that is the width it comes (24"?) plus about 6' long. I can store it rolled up easily behind the driver's seat. Unrolled, it covers the driver's side long window main section (so I can still open/close the part over the kitchen sink), and/or the full passenger side window. This way I only have to store one piece, and usually I only want to cover one side or the other anyway (sun). Of course if in a situation where I wanted to do both sides (say, cold weather), I'd just get more. Although even in cold weather, there is usually one side I don't want to do - because then I WANT the sunny side to admit heat.

The side window pieces just slip behind the strings for the day/night shades.

I also cut one piece to just fit in either the driver or passenger-side side window - stays in place with nothing but a friction fit. Again, I usually only do one side or the other, but these are small enough that I think I'm going to make another. I have a "store bought" reflective folding windshield thingie, but when that dies I'll probably make one out of Reflectix as the purchased one doesn't cover perfectly - leaves some gaps.

Lastly, I cut a small piece to friction fit in the door window. Slight pain as you have to open the doors and separate the screen/main door to use it, but sometimes it comes in handy.

I have read things about "Don't use these or your windows could/will crack in the hot sun." I wondered about this because of the fact that many purpose-made windshield covers are made of silvered material that is very similar. I did some reading and, best I can tell, it's not an issue for non-double-paned windows. It was a bit murky though. I have used it on all my rig's windows in very hot sun and not had a problem (much of this was before I even read about it). I don't have double-paned coach windows though - they are single-paned tempered glass.

On the trash cans, link to a thread I started on wastebaskets and bags.

I happened to be in a "Container Store" a few weeks ago and I noticed they still have that skinny garbage can (the green one; it also comes in black and, IIRC, white). I'm still using the same setup and it's still working well for me.

I bought Camco 45166 Reflective Window Cover 48 x 120 Inch. I cut it into two pieces that fit the left and right windows over the couch and dinette. Put another piece on the passengers window (same as Blue~Go, one side and stuffs into frame/friction). I use them when the RV is parked at the house in the summer but not while on trips. It winter storage months (7-8 months....New England and limited vacation time :( ) its stored in an indoor climate controlled RV storage facility.

I posted about my trashcan on the other thread (grocery bag, no cost, no "wasted" space").

I do have double-paned coach windows and after doing some reading, found this article, so I think I'll pass just out of safety. Safety of my wallet: http://www.rvquicktips.com/2014/05/can- ... ge-to.html
