Hello everyone, We are new to the forum… We recently purchased a 1994 Ford Chinook Premier!
My question is what does everyone do for insurance? We were surprised to find out how much insurance will cost on a 1994 chinook… And the fact that if there is ever a claim, we may have a hard time recuperating our money. Does anyone have any suggestions on insurance?
I would assume prices vary by region? I have State Farm and its like half the amount to insure my chinook vs my pickup. Although I do plan on upping the coverage so we will see if that is still a true statement afterwards.
My insurance is way cheaper (1/3 or 1/5) than my regular vehicle, and my other vehicles are just the cheap Corolla and old SUVs. I only do liability, so maybe the comprehensive part will really make it expensive?

I just have liability, meeting the minimum standards for Texas. I have my 'normal' insurance through State Farm, but they wanted big $$ for the camper, even when combined with my other policies, so I ended up with Progressive, which was way cheaper. But yeah, if I wreck the camper, I'll be paying out of pocket for repair or replacement.

Just a note, I have liability-only also and just got burned... my Concourse was sitting at a service shop a few days after it was ready for me to pick it up, and my catalytic converter got sawn off and stolen. Guess what? Liability doesn't cover theft, and while I don't have the estimate for replacement from the shop yet, the part alone new is around $2,500.
Oh, and no, many (most?) shops have signs about your vehicle being in their lot not being their responsibility (certainly not if you don't pick it up the day its ready), so the shop's insurance doesn't cover it. They've never had a theft, but most of the trucks they service are diesel and don't have that juicy, easy to steal, easy to sell, catalytic converter.
While we love and value our Chinooks, insurers do not. Trying to find coverage for a 27 year old motorhome in terms of its replacement cost will be tough and expect to pay for it. On my classic cars I have stated value policies. If they are totaled I will receive the agreed upon value.

And we are sorry to hear about your converter being stolen.
We spend too much on insurance due to a few too many cars.....our Chinook thru progressive is $573/yr for full coverage.....by comparison my 68 Camaro is $275 thru classic car firm but has many use limitations, my other vehicles are $2,300......son drops off our insurance next summer so I assume this will drop a bit.
Wow…I thought maybe it was just us paying too much for insurance but it doesn’t sound too bad… Getting the kids off our policy definitely saves money. We went with Geico for just under 600 bucks for full coverage.
