2002 Destiny - Service Engine Soon light

Hello!
We just got our new to us 2002 Destiny (Chevy 3500 chassie) and after driving it a few times the "Check Engine Soon" light came on. We took it to a place who ran it and go the code and said it had to do with the EVAP system and that it could be the gas cap. He ran a smoke test and said there were not leaks. We changed out the gas cap and the light went off, but then it came back on about 500 miles later.

We have an appt to get it checked on the 20th, because we need to get it registered which we need smog for and cant pass with that light on, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has any ideas of something we could try before our appointment.

I heard if this is your issue, but I heard there is a charcoal canister that used to filter air venting to the atmosphere from the fuel tank, and if it got flooded with fuel, it may trigger this error. Just something that came to my mind when I read your post, so take it with a block of salt.
