REFRIG ONLY WORKS ON LP

Post by terance13 »

Hey...what is broken on my 2001 Chinook Norcold refrig when it only works on LP? If I select "AUTO" I get a red "x" and the refrig completely dies! Thanks!

Your 110 heating element has a good chance of being burnt out, you can disconnect Connections and check with meter. You can also check to see if you have power at connection when switched to 110 mode.

First make sure you are plugged in to shore power or on generator to get 110V. "Auto" only switches to AC (not DC mode) when 110V is present. Th refrigerator is plugged into a 110V AC outlet in the rear behind the plastic vent on the exterior (above the generator), so make sure you have power there. I think this outlet is on the GFCI circuit, so make sure the GFCI is not tripped, by checking the outlet near the bathroom door with the reset button. If you do not have power at the 110V outlets, check your AC breakers in the brown electrical box on the left side behind the cover.

Congratulations on your new Chinook. Mine is a 2001 Concourse, so very similar. It's a wonderful machine.

Do you have 110 voltage to anything else in the rig? Plug something into the outlets to see if they are even getting powered. If there is no power to the outlets the the problem is most likely not related to the fridge itself. Check the obvious first, which would be the ground fault outlet by the bathroom, check your breakers in the power center. Even if you dont have 110 power the fridge indicator lights will still be powered by 12 volt DC power. If you have concluded that you have no power to your outlets either and none of the breakers are tripped, then your transfer switch may be to blame.Start your generator, place the fridge in Auto mode, and see if it switches over to 110 volt using the generator. If the fridge wont switch to 110 with the generator either then you need to start testing the fridge itself and wiring.
