Replaced Cup Concole/BeverageMate

Post by Skillet »

After reading on here about some people changing their cup console and gaining more storage space, I got interested. Blue was good enough to point me to a seller on Ebay that had one for under $100. When I started looking everyone wanted $140 or more so I snapped it up. I believe it came out of an '03. Do a search for "Ford Econoline Van Console Cup Holder" and you'll see what's available.
What was shipped to me had black scuffs, black sticky covering the bottom of the cupholders as well as compartments, ashes in the ashtray, and smelled of cigarettes. While disappointed I could see it just needed some elbow grease to get it presentable. I put it in my bathtub and filled the cupholders and compartments with a mix of water and lavender Pinesol (don't judge me on my lavender). I let it sit for several days and using an old sponge, it cleaned up good. I then used a product similar to Armour-All for the exterior and that helped get rid of the cigarette smell as well as the black scuff marks.
Removing the BeverageMate took longer than installing the new console. There were 2 screws at the top and what I didn't know, a 3rd screw hidden at the bottom. I took the 2 screws out and could barely budge it when trying to lift it up off the posts that secure it. After a bunch of cursing and attempts at dead-lifts I got on my side and looked under the bottom. Hidden behind the main plastic was the 3rd screw. Once I got that out it lifted up easy. I disconnected the wires and secured the wires coming from the floor with electrical tape and removed the 7.5a fuse. The new console just slid down on the 3 posts and it's holding tight. Perfect fit. I lost the foot/floor space that was under the BeverageMate but that's ok. It doesn't affect me getting out of the seat and going to the back. It will actually help keep one of my Shepherds who likes to sleep next to me on long trips from trying to crawl behind my legs while I'm driving.

Don't know why all the pictures make it look like I have big, brown spots on my carpet. Cause I don't...
Oh yeah, what are those 3 grooves on the left side of the console? To run wires along? Nothing underneath it...

Coin slots. Or, as I call them, pointless coin slots. One of them will almost hold a chapstick, sort of. I guess they made more sense when people flung coins at the toll baskets on the tollway. Even though it would be a stupid reason to break into someone's vehicle, I'm never completely comfortable leaving a bunch of money showing (plus I keep coins elsewhere anyway). But .... coin slots!

Looks like you did a great job cleaning up the console. It's only, oh, about fifteen times the space. Enjoy! :D

Nice upgrade. Looks great.
(That is the exact console I have in my 2004 Premier.)

I'm very happy with all the space I gained. For the fun of it I put some coins in the holder and it works really well.

Guess I'd better upgrade my assessment of the coin slots 8-) They hold a chapstick for about three days then randomly let it fall out and roll under the gas pedal

I replaced mine with that exact one. I found it at pik n pull. Still have to paint it as it has scratches all over.
There's another thread about these as well. This style is known as the evil clown face.

That looks great! We just bought a '94 Premier and need to do something with the console! With no glove box and no cupholders, it's pretty sparse with only a large map/atlas pocket on the front.

This is one of the latest consoles, and has lots of cupholders, nooks, and crannies. I put some USB ports inside using the beverage-mate wires:

They come and go on EBay, but this one is cheaper than some, but more than they were a few years ago.

Just as a note, the 1994 cab will not take the interchangeable consoles many of us are talking about that fit on the 1997-present doghouse. There may be console add-ons for the 1994, but they would be different. I only remember seeing things like wooden cup racks that fit on top and extend back a bit, but there may be others.

Congrats on your new-to-you Premier!
