Got it. Thanks very much for this clarity Scott - super useful. Unfortunately it seems the previous owner had someone do EXACTLY what you recommend against. So someone is going to have to clean all that off and do it right. Maybe that is a $1,200 job.Scott wrote: June 6th, 2019, 9:43 am ...
Since professor Blue hasn't chimed in, I'll toss this in for levity. Lap sealant and bedding are totally different. Bedding goes under a flange (butyl putty in our case). Lap sealant goes around the perimeter of the outside of a flange. Re-bedding is advised. Lap sealant is not, although it's standard practice in RV land. Furthermore, lap sealant is severely ill advised if it's placed over existing lap sealant. It sounds like that's what they intend to do and I consider that to be very poor practice.
I think the pricing is terrible. I just want my Chinook back and I’ll start fresh, three weeks and $600 later.Rebedding isn't difficult but there are a lot of ways to do it incorrectly. Also, you'd obviously be on the roof 9 feet off the ground, it can get messy, and one needs to take time and care to ensure cleanliness and properly tightened fasteners; too loose and you might get leaks, too tight and you squeeze out too much putty and you can get more leaks. New screw holes might need to be drilled and then the old ones would need to be filled. It's not brain surgery but it takes a bit of a touch.
I feel for ya Bett. This is a bummer. And I'm inclined to agree that they might be intentionally scaring you away.
PS - I bought a brand new, lovely toilet for $120 delivered, and it came with new seals and was an straightforward installation. Their prices are insane.
SO- I am wondering if this is something I might consider taking to a body shop and getting the whole thing buffed, rebedded and repainted. I want to do that anyway. If it’s going to cost more than $1000 just to take care of the roof, would it make any sense to just go knock out the bodywork and the restoration of the outside first? And then start working on the inside?
Gah. I need to breathe and remember it’s just a rig and not get emotional about this. First World problem. Maybe I won’t be using her much this summer and I need to accept that and move forward.
