Correct tool for rear fold away step bracket fasteners

The side brackets on the rear fold-away steps are held on and connected by bar that goes from one end of the steps to the other, and fastened with what looks like a star socket or allen wrench fastener.

Does anyone know the size star socket or allen wrench is needed to unscrew the ends? Their pretty big.

Okay, now you've got me about to go out in "sneet" just because I'm curious! I removed and then re-installed just the lower step recently, but that only took two wrenches (or a wrench and a socket). 9/16" if I remember correctly.

Okay, back (wasn't going to linger!). I see there are two rods that run through the step as well (those don't need to be tinkered with to simply remove and reinstall a non-broken step). On mine those just end in big solid round metal heads.... looking for all the world like there is not even a way to remove them. Maybe there is some kind of driver slot hidden in the heads beneath the paint...

Sorry I can't help. But I'll certainly pay attention to what transpires.

Hark! I think I caught Blue not reading every single post in the forum! The answer actually was mentioned here.

To answer your question directly, it is a Torx 55. Not the Torx 55 PLUS for the front seat bolts, but regular, readily available T55 that you can get from most auto parts store.

I ran up to shop to take a pic, not sure size and didn't want to buy awhole kit for just one, it is female fastener so need male end:

You can get single bit by itself. I got mine from Autozone. It was like $4.

Interesting! Mine doesn't have fasteners there, but instead has a flat headed "disc" that looks basically permanent. (It's painted white like the rest of the step.) Chinook must have changed that later I guess. I'd snap a photo but it's dark at the moment.
