Wooden electrical box in closet

In my 2002 Destiny's closet, there's a wooden box in the closet attached to the hallway wall. It evidently holds the electrical parts of the hallway receptacle--my question is, does it have any other function, as it's much bigger than would be needed to house only the elect. receptacle unit?
