Recomendation on tire change

Post by 68camaro »

Hi, since 2018 I have had Goodyear Duratec AT tires on my lifted Chinook, the tire size is LT235/85/16. These are great tires both on and off-road in all conditions and held up great but due to age I am looking to replace.

However, since I regularly drive 3 - 8 hours to get to my fishing spots, and my off-road is really limited I learned I do not need an AT tire as aggressive as the Duratec.

Can any one recommend an all season tire that that is used occasionally on fire roads and dirt roads that is smoother and quieter than a more aggressive AT off-road tire. I am also open to a more narrow tire as well. I don't want highway only tire FWIW.

I am thinking of the Vredestein Pinza AT which looks good but no nothing about it and not sure how much quiter than my Duratecs - https://www.vredestein.com/car-suv-tire ... -PINZA-AT/

Thanks

Chuck

I absolutely love this tire. I put almost 600,000 miles on two Jeep Grand Cherokees since 2004 on these. Our 2004 JGC we still have and use as backup, and my 2014 with over 330k miles went kaput so I replaced with 2024 JGC not long ago.

I want to stick with my current size which they don't offer, but if I decide to change sizes I would probably get these if they offered the size I needed.

I've been using these tires since 2020 with very good results:

Michelin Agilis CrossClimate LT225/75R16 115/112R E

Size: LT225/75R16
LT = Light Truck tire construction
225 = Section width in millimeters
75 = Aspect ratio (height is 75% of width)
R = Radial construction
16 = Rim diameter in inches
Load Index: 115/112
Single: 115 = 2620 lbs max load per tire
Dual: 112 = 2405 lbs max load per tire when used in pairs on an axle
Speed Rating: E
Maximum safe operating speed of 106 mph
Additional Specs (likely for this tire, but double-check if critical):

Overall Diameter: ~29.3 inches
Tread Depth: ~13/32 inches when new
Construction: LT-Metric, likely 10-ply rated for durability
Features: CurbGard sidewall protection, Max Pressure profile, StabiliBlok design, SipeLock technology
Intended Use: All-season, commercial vans/light trucks, 3PMSF winter certified
2002 Chinook Destiny 2400 XL Class B w/Chevy 8.1 Vortec Engine.

I just put Michelin Defenders on my new Grand Cherokee and love them. I was running the Nitto Grappler for years but driving habits changed and didn't need tires as aggressive. The Agilis CrossClimate would be nice but I think a bit to highway focused for my needs.

I ordered the Falken Wildpeak AT4 and get put on Monday, I have two long trips over the next few weeks and will report on results. I think the Wildpeak is good medium between my aggressive Duratecs and the tires like the CrossClimate.

Yo Chuck, when it comes to swapping out your Duratec AT tires for a smoother and quieter all-season option for mostly highway driving with occasional off-road action, the Vredestein Pinza AT seems like a solid choice. But since you're unsure about it, maybe ask around for more user reviews or consider checking out similar tires like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S or Continental TerrainContact A/T. It's important to find that right balance of performance and comfort for your adventures, so do some research and maybe hit up some forums for more insights before making the switch. Good luck, bro!

Hey Chuck! Stoked to see you're in the market for some new tires for your Chinook. If you're hitting up those fishing spots on the reg but not doing too much hardcore off-roading, I'd recommend checking out the Vredestein Pinza AT. They seem like they would suit your needs with occasional dirt road action and should be smoother and quieter on the highway compared to aggressive AT tires like your Duratecs. Do some research on them, see if they have the right specs that match your driving style, and make sure to check out some reviews from other drivers. Safe travels and tight lines on those fishing adventures, man!

RevRandy, it was a toss up between the Falkens and the Pinza AT’s, I think they are fairly similiar. My regular shop sells tons of Falkens and noone around me has experience with the V. Pinza so went with Falkens.

I have the Michelin Defenders on jeep but need something a little more aggressive for Chinook.

Last week I had the Falken Wildpeak 235/85/16 tires installed with alignment and bearings packed. The tires replaced Goodyear Duratec that were great but I didn't need a tire as aggressive any more so I purchased the Wildpeaks which seemed like nice compromise between the Duratec AT's and All Season.

On first trip, almost 800 miles, I am very happy with tires, they are much quieter than the Duratec's plus ride much smoother. The Wildpeaks still have an aggressive look which goes well with rigs setup. I can now listen to podcasts on my iPad without needing to use my earpods.
