This is how we did it. Removed the screws which connects the couch backrest to metal brackets that allow the couch to open and close. The backrest is now free to move around and help create a daytime couch and a wider bed for sleeping. We covered the brackets with pipe insulation. While traveling, place the backrest back on the metal brackets but without screws. Just for support. At night just place the backrest BEHIND the metal brackets.The bed is about 8 inches wider now and it creates an aisle!
I saved the screws so the next owner can reconnect the backrest if they prefer.
It works for us.

Part two. Sorry about the pictures not posted correctly. We store our pillows behind the backrest during the day. It’s not top shelf workmanship but it’s a simple plan ( what took me so long? ) and I haven’t used any Alabama chrome.
