Can someone identify these two relays?

Post by BoomBoom »

I’m trying to identify these two relays in the engine bed. They are not connected to the fuse box, but are screwed into the side of the engine bay. Does anyone know what they are, and as a follow up does anyone know if they need to be grounded by being screwed into the engine bay?

This is a 1995 E350 chinook concourse

I can't identify those, but just as some basic info you might want to know: The 1995-ish time frame had some differences to what Chinook kind of "settled in on" around 1997-onward. So IIRC you have some separate solenoids vs. the LVD/Surepower; house battery may be under hood, etc. Just so you are aware because people answering may have the system from around 1997-onward and assume yours is the same.

This may not directly answer your question (because I don't remember those relays specifically) but there was a longish thread with user "kyidletime" where we worked through some of the details of his system and I believe some drawings were posted. I think his Chinook was a 1995 Premier, but it may have been a 1996. At any rate, it had the "pre-1997" system.

Also, those may be Ford relays. If so they should be documented in your Ford owner's manual (vs. being a Chinook thing).

Blue, those *are* Ford relays.

I would look up the part number on the relays, and see what they are used for on the E350. These are not installed by Trail Wagons, I am pretty sure.

You said in one of your messages that nothing worked when unplugged from shore, but worked with generator. These could be the senoilds that engerize your coach battery. There should be a switch some where to turn coach battery on.

I see two large disconnect solenoids, one with label "ECHLIN" on it. Are they for batteries? Very different from my 1999 Ford E350.

The two solenoids with the yellow zinc plating and the red wires... One is for auto combining your house batteries to your alternator, and the other one is for jump-starting.

The two black relays are already grounded. They're fine.

Yep, that's the mid-1990's system for combining and charging, as Scott says. Member kyidletime started a thread back in the day and we sussed it out (because not only did he have this system, but a PO had done some "creative" wiring to bypass those solenoids). I'm not sure how much ended up in his thread vs. some PM sluething, but it's likely back there somewhere in deep thread history.

Another feature of that era system is that there was just one house battery and it was under the hood (at least in the year kyidletime had, and I want to say he had a 1995 Premier). Start battery on front driver's corner, and house battery on front passenger corner (opposite to the V10).

Well, it would be great if we can keep these informative conversation out in the open for posterity..... or it is posteriority?

Anyway, it is interesting to know the evolution of the Chinook designs.

I typically agree. But the thread was quite long, so it's not like we were letting the it die on the vine while we PMed. But eventually we had to do some off-page "ad nauseum" additional repetition. It went on and on and OB (and most of that was oddball stuff the PO did as "fixes," so not Chinook-useful necessarily). I think he then posted a synopsis of his re-vamped system afterward (in same thread).
