Name your top three rides in your Chinook

Post by Xatlatc »

Only three? Difficult isn’t it? Here’s mine in no particular order.
1. Cherokee, North Carolina to Front Royal, Virginia via the Blue Ridge parkway and Skyline Drive.
2. Banff, Alberta Canada to Jasper, Alberta Canada via the Icefields Parkway.
3. Hwy 101/US 1 from Northern California to Sequim, Washington.
Can’t do just three.
4. Sedona, Arizona to Flagstaff,Arizona via Hwy 89A.
5. Biloxi, Mississippi to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi via US 90.
Your turn.

I've got quite a few also, but here are some of my top drives:

#1 Highway 12 in Utah between Bryce NP and Capital Reef NP - This goes through the very last surveyed area of the US, and every turn is fantastic
#2 Dead Indian Pass (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway) between Cody, WY and Northeast entrance to Yellowstone. Flat solar panel blew off the roof on this one.
#3 Icefields parkway in Canada seconded, Banff to Jasper and back, through the glaciers, Stunning
#3 tie - Independence Pass over the Rockies on Colorado Hwy 82. at 12095 ft, Highest paved pass in the country, east slope climb is amazing, then drops down to Aspen

Many others:
Colorado Hwy 90/Utah Hwy 46 from (roughly) Bedrock, CO to Moab - Unexpectedly beautiful, we from Black Gunnison NP to connect to this.
Going to the Sun Road in Glacier NP - they let me drive the Concourse, but I had to take the bikes off the rear. We went from north to south
Laramie, WY to Rocky Mountain NP via WY Hwy 230 and CO Hwy 127/125 - Lots of dead forest unfortunately but much beauty also
Blue Ridge Parkway
Interstate 70 through Glenwood Springs, CO
I-10 in Eastern Louisiana, Atchafalaya Basin Bridge through (have to say it) Gross Tete, not to be confused with Grand Teton
I-80 Bozeman, MT to Spokane, through Coeur d'Alene, ID

Honorable Mentions:
CA Hwy 1 San Luis Obispo to Monterey through Big Sur. Underappreciated by me because we live nearby and have driven it several times.
Natchez Trace, MS, free camping, leisurely drive
Key West Road - mostly overrated, but some beautiful causeways
Much of West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas mountain drives
All of Utah, Northern AZ

So many others, but not remembered so vividly as these. We use the scenic highway dots on our Atlas maps to guide most of our routes.

#1 Icefield Parkway in Canada. Some of the best campsites in North America are in Canada.
#2 Going to the Sun Road. The Park Ranger did not let us drive on it, saying that it was too long. He is a professional, and I am not going to argue with him, so I took the shuttle. Sorry,, I know that is cheating, since it was not in a Chinook.

I don't have #3 yet, but I would like to put the drive from Chase, CA to Hole-In-The-Wall campground in Mojave Desert via the Cedar Canyon Rd as honorable mention. The GPS says it is 30 minutes, but it took us more than an hour on the washboard, unpaved road to get to the campground. I do not have any dental filling, but I think I can pull out all my wisdom teeth with my fingers that night.

I have to "ditto" some of the previously mentioned rides:
--Xatiatc and Chin_k are right about the Ice Highway from Banff to Jasper, and Sedona to Flagstaff via Oak Creek Canyon
--Caconcouse is right on about Independence Pass into Aspen, and that Hiway 12 from Bryce up toward Capitol Reef--try to get a site at Calf Creek Campground (14 spaces only with fantastic canyon hike from campground to waterfall) AND there is a terrific Farm to Table Restaurant in Boulder Town itself that should not be missed! And of course, the Blue Ridge!
--I hear tell Flame is right about the road through the Florida Keys...
That said, here are the three top rides off the top of my head that haven't been mentioned yet:
--The Peak-to-Peak Highway (72 and 7) from Nederland to Estes Park in Colorado
--Hiway 191 in Montana from Malta to Lewistown
--Canada Hiway 1 all across Newfoundland from Channel-port aux Basques to St. John's--I mean, how can you not stay in Blow Me Down Provincal Park, or Dildo Run ( up from 1 on 330 and 340)??? The most intense forest I have ever seen coupled with tiny authentic fishing villages. No infrastructure for regular tourists...a Chinookers Paradise!

1. Newfoundland, mostly western area, especially around Gros Morne NP.
2. The road up from Banff to Jasper NP others have mentioned
3. Highway 380 in NM, west of Roswell through Lincoln (Capitan Mnts) coming home after a long trip two days ago. Mountain goats, antelope, mule deer and sheep, beautiful scenery and almost no traffic
