Chinook RV

Hi. I recently purchased a 2003 Concourse and the gentleman I purchased it from said gas goes in extremely slow because “there’s a plastic hose that curves under the side and down to the tank. This hose is kinked slightly. A local Chevrolet dealer said they could replace it but it is not a standard size, like what would be for a van.” He said if you turn the gas handle sideways while it’s going in the gas goes in without backing up. I tried but it take about 15min to fill the tank.

Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

I think on my Concourse, the hose is standard E350 part from Ford. I would worry why it was kinked. Can you unkink it by rotate the hose at the filler area? I assume yours is on a Chevy chassis? Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

To help anyone answering, "Cascade" has a Chinook Cascade on the Chevy chassis. Seemingly the previous owner thought it was a Concourse though?

(The Cascade is related to the Destiny in the same way the Premier is related to the Concourse; in other words the Cascade is the slightly more economical version of the Destiny. Both the Cascade and Destiny are 24-footers on the Chevy chassis. The Premier and Concourse are 21-footers on the Ford chassis*.)

Other than that clarification I can't help, because I have a Concourse on the Ford chassis.

So... I dropped the Cascade (2003) off at a Chevy Dealership last night and they just called about the 15 minutes it takes to fill my gas tank because it keeps clicking off. Chevy said they had it on the lift and the tank is virtually horizontal to the filler neck and there is nothing they can do because the gray tank is below the filler neck. I'm totally confused now why no one else has this issue...

I'm totally speculating here, but I suspect the hose might be pinched or something, or else everyone with a Chevy Chinook would have the problem.

However, you might try changing the angle of the fuel pump handle to keep it from clicking off prematurely. We have a minivan with a cap-less fuel filler that some owners have complained about some pumps turning off while filling. They found if they put the nozzle in upside down or sideways, it works. Not all nozzles had the symptom, but some may be more sensitive to back pressure than others.

Removing the gray tank for access is tough, but you can probably get an RV shop to do it for you, and they could probably replace or fix the filler hose as well. RV shops are hit or miss, but you could look for references in your local area for a reliable shop.

INow I understand what you mean by sloow filling. used to have similar issue with a Chevy Traverse, where it keep clicking the handle off while fueling. Some pumps are better than the others, but I have problem with most of the pump at Costco. It was a 2017 and 2018 model years that I experience this. i have no problem with Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia (2011-2016 model years), which are pretty much identical structurally.

I don't think the fuel hose can make a difference for it to be pinched or anything. I suspect it is the fuel vapor recovery system that keep you from filling it quickly. You can verify the recovery system issue by going to a State that does not use the recovery system, or fill it up with a portable plastic tank. If it is the position of the gas tank, you should not have problem for the first few gallon, and it get slower and slower as you get more gas into it. I am with Clay that it should not be the tank or the fuel hose.

I just got a 2003 Cascade and it is a NIGHTMARE to fill. Different stations do have better luck.
Contacted the previous owners and they said they had the hose and inlet looked at twice, nothing wrong.
Tough to pick and choose gas stations on the road. Any ideas are welcome !

The issue I had with the crossover SUV is with the Californian nozzle that got trigger and shuts off the pump when it think it is going to spill, but it is barely have any gas in the tank. It is very pump dependent, and I have most problem with Costco's filling stations.

Did any gas spill out during filling? It never happened to me, but it would take 10X longer to fill and I can't leave the nozzle alone as with my other vehicle.

I do not have that problem with my Chinook, however.

I have had the shut off issue with my 2016 Dodge Challenger at both Fred Meyer, and Costco stations. I now only fill at the half locking position on the pump nozzle and haven't had recent problems.

Just got back from road trip with the Chinook and yes it is still terribly slow to fill the tank, first 10 gal goes in OK, last 20 are brutally slow .
We heard the same story about the tank is virtually horizontal to the filler neck and there is nothing they can do because the gray tank is below the filler neck.
I think there is an issue with the hose a kink etc. but living with it for now.
