Chinook RV

I first heard about EFI retro fitted car engines over 10 years ago. They were expensive at first, but a few affordable options have popped up (https://www.affordable-fuel-injection.com)
Has anyone ever heard of someone replacing the carb on a generator with some sort of efi? I'm sure some inspired gear head has done it, but maybe hasn't written about it.
I dislike carburetors and we constantly heard about gumed up carbs on these infrequently used generators.

It maybe difficult to EFI the gen set, however, but I am not a gear head.

It maybe a lot easier and cheaper to make it to run on propane, and that would take care of the gunk issue, won't it? I think there a few companies that sell dual- or tri- fuel kits. Don't know if that is practical, and I do not remember if there is any that specifically for Onan inside a RV.

Some of the diesel Chinook has propane generator, but they came that way from TW. I wish some of the diesel folk can chime in and tell us how they like the propane gen set. I think they do have a slight watt penalty, like 10% or so due to heat content, but if I am picky about that, I would get a nuclear generator instead...

Don't know if which of the conversion method is better, and whether any of them is the right thing to do for the RV. I would ask Onan and see if they think it is a good idea.

It wouldnt be cost effective to even try due to the fact that no EFI kit is a simple matter of taking it of the box, bolting it on and living happily ever after. The kit would have to be installed and then you would need to find someone that could dial it in using a dyno to tune the engine under load ect.... otherwise you would most likely end up with no generator in short time.

My generator on my 1984 Airstream moho was powered by propane and I liked it a lot. No problems with carburation. I wish our Chinooks were similar.

Yes, inadvertently, I meant "our" Chinooks, since most of the posts in these threads that I've been reading are Chinook gassers (not to be confused with qtr. mile type).
To elucidate, I would have liked a propane generator option in the 21' Concourses. I would have picked it right away. Not that the current one is bad. I just don't the idea of sharing my SHTF gas!

I wonder if anyone look into converting their genset to work on propane. There is only a few part that is different between the gas one and the propane one. And there are the trifuel and dual-fuel conversion that people do to their genset.

Don't propane gen's have their own type of problems? A friend had one and they dealt with costly repairs twice. Though I don't know the exact details. Could have been due to living at cold altitude.

As a side note: The pickup for the generator should be higher up than the engine one. Thus the generator should run out of gas when there is still about 1/4 tank (so you can still drive).

Yes that is true. I don't like my tank getting to the 1/4 level. For some reason it seems that the last quarter gets burned so much faster than the first quarter!
