Chinook RV

Hoping someone might be able to help. Noticed this the other day...it appears to be a very large bushing, mounted between two plates...one of which the rear sway bar is attached to. I removed it hoping to find a part number or some other marking indicating what it is....but there is nothing. Any help is appreciated. Heading to Apache Junction the first week of October and need to get this fixed. Local RV/Ford (E350) shops have not been of any help thus far.

They are only lasted for a few years, because they are made out of rubber. I would get it fixed, since the extra shear on the driver passenger side will make it break earlier. But some people change both at the same time, so you may not care.

The good news is that it is on the driver side, and it is a lot more easier to replace than the passenger side. It took me around 8 hours to do the passenger side due to the exhaust pipe in the way, but only two hours for the driver side. I have the MorRyde compression tool but I have to use porta-power to do the passenger side due to the pipe. I was learning while doing it, and that is why it took so long. Should not be more than an hour or two for competent garage with jack to lift up the rig. (I spend substantial amount of time jacking up the rig on my driveway.)

Finally heard today my repair shop replaced the MorRyde Shear springs, they broke two porta-powers rated at 4 tons trying. They think the way they had van lifted cause the extra strain. Today they got a 10 ton unit and they said repair was easy at that point. I can't pick up until Wednesday but they said it raised the rear a good 2 - 2 1/2 inches.

Thanks for the info everyone! I ordered two replacements from Morryde today. Removing the driver's side (broken) one was not too bad, then again, it was broken and I was able to pry it out...I was wondering how difficult it would be to get the new one back in. I might be relegated to taking it to a shop...I'll find out this weekend.

Actually, IME, it is easier to install than remove, unless it is the passenger side where the tail pipe is in the way to compress the spring. Some people I heard used large C-clamp to compress the spring and finish the installation. I think their instruction is sufficient for most people to DIY.

I am a bit surprised that the machine shop have problem with installation with porta-power. I used the cheapo Harbor Freight one, and it was more than enough to get the job done. I think a 4-ton unit is more than sufficient.

I think 68camaro was doing a modified install to get a raise. Maybe that made it harder.

I don't know what the lift involved, and do not know much about mechanical things, but if they managed to break two 4-ton hydraulic jacks merely to compress it enough to insert the spacer pad under the springs, I would worry about the amount of strain on the system after the compression force is removed. I think 68camero's experience is unusual.

My question is why not remove this system all together. All I ever read about is these things tearing and being replaced. There are many other options that seem more reliable. None of my chinooks have more ryde and they seem to be doing fine. An add on by "super springs" comes to mind.
