SMan, The old wooden barracks ( WW II era ) are still standing although the doors are sealed and the windows are broken out. I read Fort Ord closed in 1994. It sits on some prime property!

Chin_k, Every language spoken in the world is taught at the DLI. It’s an amazing school. We were in a class of 12 made up of officers, enlisted and civilians for eight hours a day. We were immersed in the language to the point of dreaming in the language, which meant you were learning. If my wife and I used that language in public today, most people would know what we were saying. As upon graduating, we were sent to Zaragoza Air Base, Spain to perform air traffic control services to American forces in English but coordinate ATC in Spanish with the Spanish controllers. We were taught Castilian Spanish.

BG, I have seen hundreds of miles of almond trees, pistachio trees, strawberries, acres of Brussels sprouts and so much more. If it wasn’t for the signs in the groves/fields stating what was being grown I would have never known what it was. It looks different in the fields as compared to in the stores. I have always thought that California navel oranges were the best and the bag I bought in some parking lot proved my point. Juicy and sweet.

So here we are in the town of Napa staying at a county park with full hookups for $33 a night! Over 400 winery’s in the Napa Valley and we’re going to push on to the coast tomorrow via the Silverado Highway in the valley and then Hwy 128 to see some redwoods and hopefully get to the coast Saturday or Sunday. Better pictures soon. I like the new features on the website. Thanks Manitou!

Drove through Napa Valley and continued to Fort Bragg, California via Hwy 101 and Hwy 20. There’s a fog horn nearby and it’s working well.

Fort Bragg, California used to be a logging town and is now a fishing town. Today it was a cold, windy and rainy fishing town. Two other items of interest, an old train called Skunk Train runs from here through the forest and redwoods and then there’s Glass Beach. It was common practice for coastal towns to throw the garbage over the high bluffs as their town dump in the 1850’s and beyond. The broken glass was smoothed by the rocky sand and waves to look like gem stones along with the sand.
Heading toward Eureka, California tomorrow. Today makes six months and 11,565 miles. I now call this adventure the ‘ I Wanna See It All Tour’. The bride didn’t see the humor in that title. Ha.

Seems like you are Chinooking to the fullest!

I'm wondering: Is it just me? I can't see any of the photos in your last five posts. I can see white "blanks" where they should be, and the caption, but no photos. Seems to have happened along with the update (?)

Blu, I see all the pictures (and am enjoying them).

Xatlatc, Both of my Brothers and I all took our Army Basic Training at Fort Ord. I didn't get off the base but a couple of times. (I remember Salinas as it was the first time I was ever approached by a "lady of the evening".) A beautiful area.

A preview from my motorcycle trip a few years back.

Very interesting fact about Glass Beach. NorCal is too cold for me most of the year.

BG, I believe there are a few bugs with the update. I’m sure it will get worked out soon.

SMan, She’s still there.

chin_k, I’ve got the heat running tonight.

We left Fort Bragg via US-1 which is mainly a narrow two lane twisty road to rejoin Hwy 101 at Leggett then north on 101. What a ride. Been there, done that. Joined the Avenue of the Giants to ride through the redwoods. So cool.
We’re staying at a casino parking lot a few miles south of Eureka with plans to proceed north on Hwy 101 through Eureka toward more redwoods and Crescent City.
