Shake down camping trip

Post by Hittheroad »

Took Scoobie (96 Concourse dinette )out for a shake down camping trip, 6 days of camping by a river just to see what it will be like on its maiden voyage to Kentucky (2,500 miles one way ) Tried every sleeping combination first just the couch doable for 2 but not comfy, then couch and dinette with heads toward the couch, couch was hard on the hips, then heads toward the dinette wives hips did not like that, then the best way with heads toward cab. We were close to home so we just came home to shower and feed animals so water was conserved but after 6 days the tank was empty, batteries held up with staying in the good area, refrigerator stayed nice and cold. All in all really happy and so much easier to set up than a bumper pull trailer, think the biggest hang up will be water but you learn how to conserve.

I was not able to do a shake down when we got the rig last year, so the maiden voyage was 1700 miles to Canada. Oh, boy, what a mess. The worst thing is the water pump started leaking on the second day, and I was not able to diagnose the problem until I got home. I have a spare Shurflo pump in my garage, so if I did a shake down, it would be a simple problem to fix. But no, I end up using towels to soak up the water constantly for the rest of the trip :x

1,700 mile shakedown trip. Classic

I kind of did that. I bought my Chinook 1,000 miles away in January. Funny thing is the Chinook was fine (although I wasn't expecting all the amenities - I basically just motored and slept), but my campervan that I drove over to look at the Chinook had a freeze/break on the water inlet during a crazy cold snap while I was there.

1700 miles one-way to Canada. We took a longer way back home for the eclipse and yellowstone. The water leak and the fact that I did not know the dump valve actuators only work with the ignition on was the only two bad experiences we had. Everything else was great.
