Anyone with trip ideas?

We are excited about getting on the road and getting out first adventure underway. We want to go up the east coast somewhere? Any suggestions?

The east coast is full of attractions and has a lot of beautiful places. Of course there is also a lot of traffic, and not a lot of "off the beaten path wide open spaces" sort of camping like there is in Texas or out west. Are you going to be going yet this year? If so, I'd suggest staying south --- say NC, SC, GA, FL -- just because it's getting cold up north. But you may be hardier than me (or maybe it's because I have already lived through decades of brutal winters ). I would guess that right now campsites would be fairly available, whereas in mid-winter I would think Florida would be a bit tricky (because basically you have Florida, south Texas, and Arizona/So Cal for warm winter RV places, and since Florida is the most populated, it tends to book up). If I were going from Texas right now? I'd likely either head to NC for fall color, or, maybe even better, go to the Florida panhandle which might be lovely. I have read great things about Grayton Beach State Park. If that was still too summery, you could wend your way across and up GA/SC/NC until the weather was just right, then start back south as it cooled.

Of course check weather ahead of time; you never know in spring/fall.

Skillet may chime in with some good ideas. He's been tramping around VA/NC/etc. in his Chinook lately.

I believe this subject will get moved to the 'Trip Talk' section. Anyway, I/we are heading out tomorrow for a week or so to Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah then back to the Upstate of South Carolina. The winter rates are starting to kick in at some of the campgrounds we plan to use for a night or two. James Island County Park is located a few miles from the Historic District in Charleston and it offers a shuttle service from the park to downtown for $10.00. It's very convenient. The visitor center offers RV parking for $2.00 an hour too. Once downtown use the free trolleys to get around and see the sights. I like to eat my way through Charleston.
I've stayed at Myrtle Beach State Park which has full hookups and is a short walk to the beach and pier. I also stayed at one of the huge private parks along the beach last December with full hookups plus cable for $32.00 a night. I tend to stay in one place no more than three days then I'm ready to move on. I also hope to boondock for the first time on this trip.
I generally don't make reservations but I did for the Savannah portion of the trip. The Red Gate Campground is close to the historic district and has very high review ratings, so I'm going to give it a try. One of the trolley tour companies will pick us up at the park at 0900, provide a 90 minute tour and allow us to get on and off of their trolleys all day plus bring us back at 1600ish. I'm also considering to use Uber from the park to downtown and back and use the free trolleys in the downtown area. I didn't get to see too much of Savannah a few years ago because it was so hot in August. This time of year should be great.
Most of our trips are very fluid so we can make adjustments along the way. I assume you use a smartphone, if so, the Allstays app is my favorite app to use. It's loaded with information and is very helpful plus it's very easy to use. I also suggest you peruse the Trip Talk section of this site and read what others have experienced. Skilet just returned from the Outer Banks and provided a great report. If you're new to the RV world, pay attention to the 'Height" signs along your route. I've had to turn around a couple of times while using the secondary roads.

What part of texas are you in? I liked El Paso area and my brother keeps talking about "big bend" area just south of there.
Personally, I just got back from a California trip. I'll be in the Austin area a bit longer and then either a Florida trip or maybe head back west... not sure at the moment.

I didn't remember you were in Austin (for some reason I had you in the "Florida" compartment). Anyway, I like both Florida and the SW, but for elbow room and camping opportunities in winter, it's hard to beat SW Arizona or S California. 'course lots of places are nice when you have an RV

We are about an hour north of Austin. There are lots of beautiful places in what we call the hill country (southwest/northwest) of Austin. We did do Big Bend on a motorcycle in the spring one year and I think it would be better in an rv, but scary to drive around up there with some of the hairpin curves. Don't know if I would do it. I'm not great with heights...ugh. New Braunfels would be a nice stop if you've never been there, especially this time of year. It's made up of German settlers and being October I'm sure their October fests are under way. I could probably spend a whole year roaming around Texas alone.

Probably why I'm still living in my chinook haha.

Xatlatc: I'm interested in going to Myrtle Beach State Park. I know I can get reviews online, but what were your thoughts? I like that it's close to the beach. Do you know if dogs are allowed? Since Ocracoke was off-season, they allowed dogs which worked out great.

Myrtle Beach State Park brochure. I hope. Yes. Dogs are allowed on the beach in the off season. I saw several today as well as horses!
