While doing routine transmission maintenance with local mechanic, his flush machine decided to fail. Therefore, we elected to drop the pan and change oil the old fashion way. Upon dropping the pan, found a piece of the notorious snap ring in the bottom of pan. Since the shop does not have a heavy vehicle lift, I had the shop owner button up the transmission and send me down the road. Multiple shops recommended a new Jasper Transmission. New transmission did not sit well with me. Therefore, I looked and found a 4x4 shop in the area. The 4x4 shop sent me to their transmission specialist.
I brought the piece of metal into the transmission shop and he instantly ID the piece and asked if I had a had a Ford. I explained to him what the vehicle was and other recommendations for a new transmission. He had other ideas: Heavy Duty Torque Converter, Heavy Duty 6 pin Planetary vs the stock 4 pin, new servos and heavy duty snap rings that will sit correctly in new clutch assembly and replace all worn parts. Finally, I found the solution I was looking for. Price was less than a new Transmission and I felt like I was getting a transmission built for the weight of the vehicle. Only time will tell, but the shop gave me a 36 month warranty. BTW: Before all this started, I did not have any signs of transmission problems.
Vehicle History:
I am second owner and vehicle has 97K.
First Owner towed and dropped in a new transmission at 55K from a Ford Dealership in 2006.
Previous owner also added trans cooler after first failure and stopped towing. (Maybe)
Watching transmission temps the vehicle ran between 175 and 185. I did see 225 once going uphill on a 105 degree day. I did back off
Dumb Luck
Re: Dumb Luck
The second transmission only last 40k, that is pretty bad. Glad that you did not end up in the middle of no where with transmission fail.
