Onan generator resonator review...

Just bought and installed the Onan resonator for my 2002 Chinook, part number 155-2449. Installed it on the tail pipe to see what kind of quieting it could give me. Unfortunately, the was just about zero reduction in any kind of perceptible decibel reduction. Will be returning it to Amazon. Just wanted to let any of you know in case you were considering a purchase. really not worth anything in my opinion....Dano

Thanks for real world review, I bought one several months ago but did not install because I wasn't sure it would make a difference, this confirms I won't install but probably too old to return.

Its a resonator not a muffler. I purchased one a long time ago and it does exactly what its intended to do

Well, resonator or muffler, it had zero effect. Am I doing something wrong or are you seeing different results Doug? I'd be all for keeping it to quiet it down but I can't say it did anything at all...Dano

I got the exact same results you hear in the youtube videos. Probably the only thing you did wrong was expect it to perform like a muffler.

Hi Dano - I bought one of these and when it arrived I too slipped it over the end of the tailpipe and was really disappointed that it didn't seem to do much to reduce the sound level, particularly that "hammering" noise the Onan makes. I put the resonator away in the garage and forgot about it until last Spring. I knew that the tailpipe wasn't strong enough to attach the resonator to the end of it and thought it would look bad so I took my Chinook to a muffler shop and had them install the resonator under the generator between the stock muffler and the end of the tailpipe. Fired up the generator and couldn't believe how much the sound had been reduced, but more importantly, that hammering sound was gone completely so the generator noise was not nearly as bad. Yes, its still louder than a Honda generator but much less intrusive. I plan to line as much of the generator enclosure as possible with Dynamat and hope that will reduce it even further.

I'm not that mechanically inclined so I did have to pay about $125 to have the muffler guys install it. If you're more skilled I'd say try installing it as described above. Hopefully your results will be the same.
