Cork flooring and twin beds—2002 Destiny

Post by bolerama »

When we purchased our Destiny, the original carpet had been replaced with carpet tiles. It never felt clean. We had installed cork in 2 other RVs with positive results. Because of the floor bolts, we went with 1/2” thick planks so that the underside of the planks could be carved out over the bolts. Mark the bolts with paint or a Sharpie and place the plank overtop. Then you’ll know where to carve.

Cork is insulating, warm, and soft underfoot, much like carpet. However it can be easily cleaned. We love the result!

We removed the dinette to install the flooring. Wow! It was great to have so much floor space. However that sofa is just too small for the two of us. We need two proper beds. We are full-time RVers, spending half the year in our Chinook and the other half in our Airstream. The typical Chinook layout is ok for short trips, but not for longer trips. We will keep the furniture in case we miss having a separate dinette and sofa. However, we think this will be a big improvement for sleeping.

The first bed (dinette side) is constructed of 2x2s and fastened using a Kreg pocket jig. The frame is 72x30x18. The opening is 15” tall, which allowed us to install 2 IKEA Komplement baskets (size 50x58 cm) with pull out rails in each of the three sections. The fourth section of the frame will have an odd-shaped space because that’s where the furnace vent is.

The sleeping platform is a modified IKEA slat system. We purchased a Leirsund Queen, which comes in 2 30” sections. Perfect! This particular model has a mechanism to raise your head or feet. Also, you can adjust the firmness of the slats. The only downside is that it raises the mattress 3”, so my feet will dangle when we use it as a daybed.

Of course, it was too long, but Paul modified it by shortening it and rearranging some of the slats. It took some figuring. You can’t simply cut off the excess. It is now 72x30 and it sits directly on top of the bed frame.

Here is the slat platform on the frame. In the first photo, you can see how much more aisle space we have with the sofa fully extended.

We still need to finish the sides and stain it. We are also trying to decide on doors — either drop down or sliders. Then, we have to decide how to buy the other side out. We will likely leave the metal sofa frame and build over it.

We will be getting custom mattresses and having them upholstered so that they can be like daybeds. We will update this thread with our progress. Thanks for following along!

Well done! Love what you are doing. We used cork as underlayment for our vinyl planks, and love the soft feel they provide too.

Floor and bed both look great, well done! Definitely keep us updated.

b6fisher - did you do the same technique of carving out the underlayment to go over the floor bolts? We're likely tackling a floor next year and were looking at vinyl, but I have not researched options to make it lay flat over those bolts yet.

That's pretty sweet! Thanks for sharing Lisa. I love project threads, and it looks like you guys did great work.
I hear ya about the dual beds. Makes life much easier, especially with a wide aisle.

Is the floor floating? Or glued?

Kudos to Lisa and Paul for this really cool thread! The conversion from dinette to twin bed seems to be gaining popularity. I am also planning to do this mod using 2x2's and a Kreg pocket jig. My slat bed is a queen steel frame from Walmart ($80) that has two side-by-side slat sections. I'll be able to use the additional section for a sofa replacement mod to match the dinette side. Both sides will have the slatted frames as hinged lids for underneath storage access. 72 x 30 are the dimensions I'm using as well. The height is different since I want to make use of at least 5" deep mattresses. I plan on a total overall height of about 18-20".
Keep the updates coming!

BTW: What mattress are you using? ...size, thickness, brand name, supplier?
