1999 Concourse Heat Pump cover flew off

Post by mrfiat »

The cover for my heat pump flew off the roof while going 75 mph on the freeway. A motorist got beside me and let me know it happened. I had to drive back 10+ miles to circle around to get it. Luckily for me, it landed in the median between both sides of the interstate. It had a number of small pieces missing and a 3"x4" chunk broken off. I found that chunk and used fiberglass repair compound/mesh to repair the damaged cover.
It is held on with only 4 screws from the factory. I put a bunch of screws on it when I reinstalled it so this cannot happen again. The cover broke off where it was screwed in.

I suggest everyone add a couple of screws to their heat pump cover so this doesn't happen to you.

I attached some pictures so everyone can see what happened.

I think fiberglass repair compound should work, but I never did it before. They do this on car and boat with plastic body without problem.

I'm not so sure about fiberglass repair for that shroud, which is some type of plastic, but almost certainly not fiberglass. The boat and car bodys and panels are fiberglass.

The previous owner of our unit (2000 Concourse) had replaced the AC unit cover. This would probably have been 4 or 5 years ago. Perhaps they are still available.
